I am Kay, founder of So Buttery Skin. I started this in my kitchen after my daughter broke out in eczema as a baby and nothing on the shelf felt safe to put on her skin. Once we had her formula dialed in, I began playing with scents I loved for myself. Bergamot was the first daytime scent that made me feel put together without changing perfumes.

What is inside

The base is rich and creamy shea butter, sweet almond oil, rosehip oil, and vitamin E. That is it. We add bergamot essential oil for the scent. The shea is unrefined, the sweet almond oil softens it and helps it glide, the rosehip oil goes to the driest spots, and the vitamin E keeps the oils fresh. Eight ounces, plant based, made in small batches. Contains sweet almond oil (tree nut).

What it smells like

Fresh, citrus, a little floral on the dry down. Think Earl Grey tea steeping in a sunny kitchen. It is built for morning energy, clean daytime scent, layering under a fresh perfume.

How to use it

After your shower, while your skin is still a little damp, scoop a small amount and warm it between your palms. Smooth it onto arms, legs, chest, and anywhere that runs dry. A small amount goes a long way. Use within twelve months of opening. Store at room temperature out of direct sun. Once your jar is low, grab a refill pouch to save on every reorder.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does bergamot smell like?

Bergamot is the citrus note in Earl Grey tea. It is brighter than orange, softer than lemon, and a little floral. It reads as clean and grown up rather than juicy or sweet.

Will citrus make my skin sun sensitive?

We use bergamot at a cosmetic safe level, but as a precaution with any citrus oil, apply it before bed or under clothing if you will be in strong sun. Sunscreen is always a good move.

Is this safe for eczema prone skin?

If you are in an active flare, start with our Eczema Relief Body Butter. Once skin is calm, this scent and our other gentle scents tend to work well. Patch test on the inside of your wrist first.

How long does an 8 ounce jar last?

With daily full body use, about six to eight weeks. With targeted spot use on hands, elbows, and dry patches, much longer.

Can I use this on my face?

We recommend our Face Collection for face. The body butter is rich and works best on the body and hands, where the skin is thicker.

Is this safe during pregnancy?

Most of our body butters are pregnancy friendly when used at normal cosmetic levels. If you have any concerns, check with your provider, or start with our Unscented Body Butter.

Who makes these?

I do. My name is Kay, and I make every jar by hand in small batches in Leonardtown, Maryland. It started with a body butter for my daughter's skin, and Jeremiah and I turned it into So Buttery Skin in 2023.

What is in the body butters?

Every scented and unscented body butter starts with shea butter, sweet almond oil, rosehip oil and vitamin E. The scented ones add essential oils, and the Unscented has none. The Eczema Soothing jar has its own formula: shea, mango and avocado butters, jojoba oil, hemp seed oil, vitamin E and a light touch of tea tree and lavender. Any allergens I should know about?

Yes. Sweet almond oil is a tree nut, and it is in all of the scented body butters and the Unscented. If you have a nut allergy, check the Ingredients tab before you buy, and patch test anything new on a small spot of skin first.

Is it vegan and cruelty free?

Yes. Everything is plant based and nothing is tested on animals.

How should I store it?

Somewhere cool and out of direct sun. Shea butter softens in the heat and firms up in the cold, and that is normal. If a jar arrives soft on a hot day, pop it in the fridge for twenty minutes.

How fast does it ship?
